Airnorth is the Northern Territory's regional airline, based in Darwin and connecting remote communities across Australia's Top End, the Kimberley, and further afield. The airline has been operating since 1978 and fills a critical role in a part of Australia where road travel between towns can mean days of driving through unpaved outback. Airnorth also operates international services to Dili (Timor-Leste) and has historically served Biak in Indonesia, though international schedules vary with demand and government contracts.
The fleet of about 14 aircraft includes EMB-120 Brasilia turboprops, Embraer E170s, and Embraer E190 regional jets. This mix reflects the reality of northern Australian flying: some routes need a 30-seat turboprop because passenger numbers are small and runways are short, while trunk routes like Darwin-Alice Springs can fill a 100-seat jet. Airnorth is a vital lifeline for remote communities, Indigenous communities, and the defence and resources sectors in the NT. The airline holds government subsidised route contracts that keep services running to places where commercial demand alone wouldn't justify flights.
The Embraer E170 (about 4 aircraft) is Airnorth's mid-range jet, carrying 76 passengers in an all-economy 2-2 configuration. It handles the busier regional routes like Darwin-Alice Springs, Darwin-Townsville, and the international Dili service. The 2-2 layout means no middle seats, which is a real comfort advantage. The E190 (about 3 aircraft) is the larger variant at 100 seats in a 2-2 layout, used on higher-demand routes and charter work.
The EMB-120 Brasilia (about 7 aircraft) is the small turboprop that reaches the places jets can't. It carries 30 passengers in a 1-2 layout (single seat on the left, pair on the right) and can operate from short, unpaved runways. The Brasilia is noisy -- twin turboprops directly outside the windows make conversation difficult -- but flights are short (typically 30-90 minutes) and the aircraft is perfectly suited to the mission. The fleet mix gives Airnorth the flexibility to match aircraft to route demand, from 30-seat community services to 100-seat trunk routes.
Airnorth's cabin experience is regional Australian: functional, no-frills, and focused on getting you there safely. The E170 and E190 have the best cabins -- jet-powered, 2-2 seating, reasonable pitch (around 31-32 inches), and a service that usually includes a light snack and drink on longer sectors. There's no seatback entertainment on any Airnorth aircraft -- bring your own device and download content before you board, because WiFi isn't available either.
The EMB-120 Brasilia is a different experience entirely. It's a small turboprop with 30 seats in a 1-2 configuration, and the cabin is pressurised but narrow. Overhead bins are small, noise levels are high, and the ride can be bumpy in the tropical convective weather that's common across the Top End. That said, the flights are short, and the views of outback Australia and the tropical coastline from a low-flying turboprop are genuinely spectacular. The crew are experienced in remote operations and handle the unique challenges of northern Australian flying with professionalism.
On the E170 and E190, the 2-2 layout means every seat is window or aisle. Front rows (1-3) are quieter and deplane faster. The rear-mounted engines on both Embraer types mean noise increases toward the back of the cabin. Window seats on the left side often provide better views on approach to Darwin and coastal Top End airports.
On the EMB-120 Brasilia, the single-seat column (left side, seat A) is the premium position -- you get a window and no seatmate. The paired seats on the right (B and C) mean one person gets the window and one gets the aisle, but they're close together. Front rows are noticeably less affected by propeller noise and vibration. The aircraft is small enough that all seats are within a few steps of the door, so deplaning speed isn't really a factor. On the Dili international service (typically an E170), the same principles apply -- front rows for comfort, all seats have aisle or window access.
