Launceston Airport is Tasmania's second airport, sitting at Western Junction about 15 kilometres south of the city centre. It handles a little over a million passengers a year, well behind Hobart but comfortably the busiest airport in the state's north, and it serves Launceston along with the surrounding Tamar Valley and the wider northern Tasmania catchment.

It is a domestic regional airport rather than a hub. The network runs to the mainland and to Tasmania's smaller islands, with no international services and no through-traffic. A single terminal handles everything, and a recent redevelopment added a larger check-in hall and more food and retail space, but the scale stays modest and the experience is straightforward.

The mainland trunk is carried by the major domestic carriers. Jetstar, QantasLink and Virgin Australia run the high-frequency narrowbody-jet routes to the east-coast capitals, with some seasonal services to other mainland cities. Melbourne is the heaviest route, served many times a day across the three airlines.

Alongside the jets, the regional network runs on turboprops. Sharp Airlines flies the short island hops to Flinders Island and King Island, the kind of small-aircraft service that connects Bass Strait communities to the Tasmanian mainland. Link Airways has added a direct service to Canberra, broadening the map beyond the usual east-coast capitals.

Everything works through one terminal, so there are no inter-terminal transfers to worry about. Getting to the airport is built around private vehicles: there are surface car parks a short walk from the door, and taxis, rideshare and private shuttles operate from the front. Scheduled public bus links between the airport and central Launceston have historically been thin, so factor in a car, a shuttle or a taxi rather than assuming a regular service.

Inside, check-in and security are quick by big-city standards, which is part of the appeal of a smaller airport. The terminal has cafe and retail options airside, but there are no airline lounges here, so plan to wait in the general gate area. Allow the usual time for security at peak departure waves, and a little extra during the summer tourist season when traffic to and from the mainland picks up.
