Ballina Byron Gateway Airport (BNK) is a regional airport on the New South Wales north coast, owned and run by Ballina Shire Council. It is the closest airport to Byron Bay and serves the wider Northern Rivers region, including Ballina and Lismore, which makes it busier than its single-terminal scale suggests. It is one of Australia's busier regional airports, carried largely by holiday and weekend traffic into the Byron hinterland.
Its character is firmly that of a tourist airport rather than a business hub. Demand is leisure-led and seasonal, leaning on Byron Bay's pull as one of the country's best-known holiday towns, so the terminal can feel calm midweek and full at peak.
The scheduled network is domestic and point-to-point. The core carriers are the major domestic airlines flying narrowbody jets south to the capital cities, which feed the Byron Bay leisure market; a regional turboprop link to the Hunter has run at times alongside them. There are no international, long-haul or fly-in-fly-out operations.
Frequencies rise and fall with the holiday calendar rather than staying flat year-round, and general aviation, flight training and helicopter operators also use the field alongside the scheduled airlines. Check the airline directly before you book, as the regional services in particular come and go.
There is one passenger terminal handling all departures and arrivals. Check-in counters sit just inside the entrance; past security screening there is a single departure lounge with a cafe and a small amount of retail. It is a compact building, so check-in and security are quick outside the busiest holiday peaks, and there are no airline lounges.
Most travellers arrive by car or taxi. Surface car parking sits next to the terminal, and recent works added a new access road and upgraded parking and pedestrian access. Public transport is limited to an occasional bus service, so a hire car, taxi or rideshare is the practical way in for most visitors, with Byron Bay around a half-hour drive away.
