Port Macquarie Airport (PQQ) is a regional airport on the New South Wales mid-north coast, about 390 kilometres north of Sydney. It is owned by the local council and serves the Port Macquarie-Hastings region, a coastal holiday area known for its beaches, the Koala Hospital, and the Hastings River. It handles a few hundred thousand passengers a year, which makes it one of the busier regional fields in the state without ever feeling like a major hub.

The character is regional and tourist-leaning rather than commercial. One modest passenger terminal handles all flights, the runway suits turboprops and smaller regional jets, and the operation is built around short domestic hops to the nearest capital cities. Expect a calm, low-volume airport where the walk from the car park to the gate takes minutes.

The network is domestic and turboprop. QantasLink runs the trunk routes to Sydney and Brisbane on the Dash 8 Q400, and Rex adds further Sydney services on the smaller Saab 340. Eastern Air Services, a local operator, flies the scenic run out to Lord Howe Island on small turboprops. Virgin Australia used to serve Port Macquarie but pulled out in 2020 when it retired its ATR72 fleet.

There is no long-haul, no international, and no jet mainline flying here. If you are connecting onward, you will do it through Sydney or Brisbane. The aircraft are small enough that seat choice matters more than usual, and loads can vary by time of day and season.

There is a single terminal with check-in counters for the operating airlines, security screening, baggage claim, and a cafe and bar for a coffee or a bite before boarding. There is no airline lounge, which is normal for an airport this size. The basics are covered well: toilets, ATMs, accessible parking and toilets, ramp access, and an information desk.

Getting there is straightforward. Two surface car parks sit next to the terminal, with free parking for short drop-offs and longer-stay spaces a short walk away; the lots can fill in peak holiday periods. Busways runs services that take in the airport and the town centre, and local shuttle transfers cover the route as well. Allow the usual regional buffer rather than a big-airport one, as check-in and screening here move quickly.
