Hervey Bay Airport is a small regional airport in Urangan, on the Fraser Coast in Queensland, owned and run by the Fraser Coast Regional Council. It sits well down the national rankings by passenger numbers and works as a tourist airport rather than a connecting hub, feeding the whale-watching season and the ferry crossings to K'gari (Fraser Island).
Everything runs through one modest terminal off a single runway long enough for narrowbody jets since the 2005 upgrade. Expect a compact, low-key airport: domestic only, no international flights, and a passenger flow that swells with the holiday and whale-watching trade rather than business travel.
The scheduled network is short and seasonal in feel. QantasLink runs the link to Brisbane, the busiest route by some margin, flown on the regional turboprops that work most of Queensland's shorter legs. Jetstar handles the longer hops to the southern capitals on its A320-family narrowbodies, the only jet services the airport sees.
Beyond the timetable, small charter operators fly light aircraft out to the nearby islands for day-trippers and reef visitors. There is no trunk-airline competition and no long-haul here. The character is leisure traffic: a couple of mainline carriers covering the capital-city links, with the rest given over to short island-hopping charters.
One terminal handles all departures, so check-in and security are quick and there is no airside maze to navigate. Getting there is by road: surface car parking sits close to the terminal, and most travellers arrive by car, taxi, rideshare or pre-booked shuttle. There is no rail link and no dedicated airport bus network of any scale, so plan your transfer before you travel.
The departure experience is straightforward rather than polished. There are no airline lounges, and the food and retail offering is limited to what a small regional terminal carries, so eat before you arrive if you are particular. Allow the usual buffer for the jet services, which fill up in peak season, but the airport's size means you are unlikely to spend long getting from the door to the gate.
