The Boeing 737-800 is the most widely flown member of the 737 family and, alongside the Airbus A320, one of the two aircraft that carry the bulk of short and medium-haul traffic worldwide. Domestic trunk routes, regional international hops and low-cost leisure flying all lean heavily on it, so it is one of the aircraft travellers meet most often. As with the A320, that familiarity is exactly why the seat you choose is worth a moment's thought.
The cabin is a single aisle with three seats either side, every row a window, a middle or an aisle. What varies between airlines is the density, the exit-row treatment, whether there is a separate front cabin, and where the galleys and lavatories sit. A full-service two-class 737-800 and a dense single-class low-cost one are the same aircraft with very different seat maps.
Operators configure the 737-800 across a wide range. Some run a genuine two-class cabin with domestic first or business up front and a roomier economy behind; low-cost carriers pack in a single dense economy with tighter legroom throughout. The overwing exits sit partway down the cabin, and how an airline handles those rows changes the value of the seats near them: extra-legroom exit rows on one carrier, a non-reclining row ahead of the exit on another.
Galley and lavatory placement front and rear also shifts between airlines, which changes which rows sit in the quieter middle of the cabin. None of this is fixed by the aircraft type, so the seat map for your specific airline and configuration is the reliable guide rather than a generic 737-800 template.
The best seats on a 737-800 are usually the exit rows and the front of economy, for legroom and a quick exit. Approach the row directly ahead of an overwing exit with care, as recline is often restricted there, and expect more noise and foot traffic in the back rows near the rear galley and lavatories. A window over the wing rides most smoothly; a forward window gives the best view.
