About the Airbus A321neo

The Airbus A321neo is the largest single-aisle Airbus in widespread service, and the re-engined successor to the A321. The new engines bought it enough range to cross oceans, and that one change is what makes its cabins so unpredictable: a single aircraft type now covers both short domestic shuttles and long transatlantic flying, and airlines fit it out completely differently for each job.

The cabin is a single aisle with three seats either side, the same grid as every A320-family jet, just with more rows. Everything around that grid is an airline decision: how many rows they fit, what goes at the front, and where the doors and exits sit. The A321neo has no single standard exit layout, so the extra-legroom exit rows do not sit in the same place on every airline's version.

Cabin configurations

The front cabin is where operators diverge most, and three genuinely different products fly under the same name. Some airlines fit a true lie-flat business cabin with single seats either side of the aisle, aimed at long transcontinental and transatlantic work. Others fit a recliner cabin, two seats either side, which is the usual domestic first or short-haul business seat. A third group, mostly in Europe, sells the ordinary economy seat with the middle of the three left empty and calls that business. All three appear on a seat map as business, and the gap between the first and the last is enormous.

Economy is more consistent, three and three the whole way down, but the density varies a lot and most carriers now carve out a named extra-legroom section within it. Some airlines add a premium economy cabin as well. The type is even flown as an all-business aircraft with no economy at all, which is fair warning that the aircraft name on your booking tells you very little on its own.

Seat selection tips

Check what the front cabin actually is before you pay for it. A lie-flat bed and an economy seat with a blocked middle are both sold as business on this aircraft, and the seat map is what tells them apart.

In economy, aim for an exit row or a seat near the front for legroom and a quick exit, and treat the row immediately ahead of an exit with care, since recline there is often reduced or absent. Because the type is built with more than one exit arrangement, do not assume the exit rows sit where they did on the last A321 you flew. The back of the cabin is the busiest and the last to clear.
